  • というより is built directly on より's comparison frame but shifts the target from two entities to two DESCRIPTIONS of one thing — より ranks A below B on a shared scale (高いより安いほうがいい), while というより corrects the label itself (プロというよりファン) without placing either term on a scale.

  • Both gloss as "rather than", but というより corrects how something should be DESCRIBED with no value judgment implied (プロというよりファン is neutral), while くらいなら pits two ACTIONS against each other and voices contempt for the first (謝るくらいなら死んだほうがまし) — pick というより to relabel something, くらいなら to reject a course of action.
