Notes

The trade has to be fair in the speaker's eyes: そのかわり offers something
back. Where nothing is offered and the second fact simply surprises, the
sentence starts with それなのに instead.

Related patterns

Similar

  • わりに needs the thing being replaced inside its own sentence (ちちわりにわたしく); そのかわり takes it from the sentence already finished, which lets the trade span two speakers' turns (「今日きょう無理むり」「じゃあそのかわり明日あしたね」).

  • Both pick up the previous sentence and add to it, in opposite directions — そのうえ piles a second point of the same sign on top (やすい。そのうえはやい), そのかわり concedes a drawback and offers something else in return (やすい。そのかわり時間じかんがかかる).

Lookalikes

  • Same その+noun shape at the head of a sentence, and the noun decides everything — そのため draws a consequence the reader should have expected, そのかわり announces compensation for a loss just admitted.
