Formation

Notes

Unlike はずだ/ようだ, which take Nの, わけ takes Nな directly
(学生がくせいなわけだ, not ×学生のわけだ) — a common trap for learners
used to the はず pattern. どうりで/つまり often cue that わけだ is coming.

Related patterns

Similar

  • Both close a sentence as the owed explanation, but わけだ frames it as a conclusion that logically follows from a premise just laid out ("given X, that means Y"), while んです offers background context without claiming the conclusion is forced — わけだ can read smug or pedantic where んです stays neutral.

Lookalikes

  • One word apart and easy to skim past — わけだ affirms that a conclusion follows from what was just said, while わけではない politely denies that it follows in full; missing the ではない turns a hedge into a flat assertion.
