Formation

Notes

The noun in front must be an evaluative word — あまえ, 人情にんじょう,
いがかり. With a concrete noun the frame reparses: ねこというものだ
starts a definition rather than passing a verdict.

Related patterns

Similar

  • ものだ states a standing truth about how things generally are and hangs off a predicate (ひと間違まちがえるものだ); というものだ points back at the situation just described and NAMES it (それはあまえというものだ) — the という is what turns a general observation into a verdict on this particular case.

  • わけだ says a conclusion FOLLOWS from what was just said, and can be answered by disputing the logic; というものだ says what the situation IS to be called, and can only be answered by disputing the label — 道理どうりで〜わけだ has no というものだ counterpart.

Lookalikes

  • One tail apart and easy to skim past — というものだ hands down the verdict, while というものではない refuses a proposed principle wholesale (やすければいいというものではない); missing the ではない turns a rejection into an endorsement.
