Formation

Notes

にて is essentially a formal written で — invitations, business correspondence, notices, and signage. It does not occur in ordinary spoken Japanese, not even at the polite です／ます level.

    Both skew formal and written, but において also surfaces in spoken ceremonial register (におきましては, in speeches and formal addresses), while にて never occurs in speech at all — にて is a direct one-for-one substitute for で, naming a concrete venue, date, or means (本社ほんしゃ会議室かいぎしつにて "at the head-office conference room"), while において marks a broad, abstract DOMAIN or context something occurs within (現代げんだい社会しゃかいにおいて "in modern society") and rarely names one literal venue.
