Notes

にとっては (contrast) and にとっても (even/also) attach freely with no change to the core meaning — 私にとっても大事だ "it matters to me too."

Related patterns

Similar

  • Both can translate loosely as "for N," but they mark different roles — にとって supplies the STANDPOINT a stative judgment is viewed from (子供にとって大切だ "important from a child's viewpoint") and cannot mark purpose (合格のために勉強する "study in order to pass" needs ために, never ×合格にとって勉強する); ために's beneficiary sense CAN modify a stative predicate too (健康のために大切だ "important for the sake of health"), but names who benefits, not whose viewpoint is taken — it can't supply にとって's standpoint reading, and an action verb (働く, 頑張る) can only take ために, never にとって.

  • Both put a noun in a relational frame before the predicate, but として names the capacity in which the referent COUNTS or acts — action or state alike (医者として働く "work as a doctor", 古都として有名 "famous as an ancient capital", 代表として選ぶ "choose as the representative") — while にとって requires the noun to be the party a stative or evaluative judgment applies to (医者にとって難しい "difficult for a doctor"); neither substitutes for the other.

Lookalikes

  • Learners routinely misread these as interchangeable ("toward/for N") — に対して marks the target an action or attitude is DIRECTED at (子供に対して厳しい "strict toward children" describes behavior aimed at them), while にとって frames the noun as the vantage point a judgment is made FROM (子供にとって難しい "difficult for children" describes how it looks from their side); swapping them either drops the directedness or invents a standpoint that isn't there.
