Formation

Notes

切れない (potential negative) is the everyday form — 食べきれない, "too
much to finish." 切る is also plain "cut"; 書き切る reads only as "finish
writing," never "cut while writing," since the compound always follows a
masu-stem.

Related patterns

Similar

  • 読み切る claims exhaustiveness — every last page, no remainder — while 読み終わる only claims the reading session reached its endpoint, however much was actually read.

  • Both intensify a masu-stem verb, but 切る marks reaching the END — exhaustive, nothing left — while 込む marks going DEEP, with no completion claim at all; 読み込む can describe an ongoing close reading, 読み切る cannot.
