Formation

Variant notes

Notes

The た before あとで marks completion relative to the main clause, not past time — 食べたあとで行く is a perfectly good future sentence, and ×食べるあとで is flatly ungrammatical. Nouns need の: 授業のあとで, never ×授業あとで. The で drops freely with zero change in tone.

Related patterns

Similar

  • てから welds the two events tightly (often a precondition) and alone carries the durative "since" reading (来てから三年になる); たあとで merely states the order and tolerates any gap.

  • Both hang off completion-た, and as predicates they converge when ちょうど pins the moment (ちょうど食べたあとだ ≈ 食べたところだ) — but あとで only states posteriority across any gap, while たところだ by itself claims the gap is minutes, not years.

Opposite

  • まえにplain-antonym

Mirror-image time markers with asymmetric attachment — まえに takes the dictionary form even in past narratives, あとで demands the た-form regardless of when the sentence happens.

Lookalikes

  • Both sit on the た-form, but たばかり asserts recency ("just did"), while たあとで only sequences — 十年前に卒業したあとで is neutral; たばかり with a long span needs the speaker to frame it as subjectively recent.
